I bring an assistant to almost every wedding I photograph. My assistant helps me move equipment from place to place, park the car and other logistical stuff that would prevent me from keeping my camera in my hand. Most importantly my assistant helps with lighting equipment which is often necessary depending on the situation.
About lighting. Light is one of, if not the most, important factors that effects the quality of an image. I strive to use natural and available light whenever I can. When the available light is not enough or is problematic I add and, sometimes, subtract light. Often times this is with small strobes, other times it might be reflectors or scrims. In any case my lighting is unobtrusive and set up to be transportable so I can always be where I need to.
I offer only as much direction as is needed. The idea is to produce beautiful images that will be appreciated for years to come. Sometimes it is helpful for me to speak up and suggest a pose, or a location. It’s a collaboration, we will work together to create great images. And, believe it or not, it will be fun.
I use Canon cameras. I have some of the best equipment they have to offer. All the lenses I use are from their ‘professional’ series, known by their red stripe. I occasionally shoot medium format film with a Hasselblad. I use a wide variety of lighting equipment and light modifiers.
A typical six to eight hour wedding will yield 400 to 700 images that have been edited down from the 1500 to 2000 that I shoot.
